Kids of Kurland
Just a few kilometres away from Hog Hollow Country Lodge lies Kurland Village, a remote rural township with a high incidence of unemployment which has resulted in problems with alcoholism, HIV and domestic violence.

The Kids Of Kurland School Project was begun in 2001, to provide life skills training to the children of the community, with the objective of facilitating empowerment, functional behaviour, capacity building and coping skills.

Besides instituting programs focusing on child safety, resources for life, pride project and outdoor life skills, AIDS education has also been introduced, with a view to children educating their parents through the concept of joint homework.

Another prime objective, when the project was established, was raising funds to enable the school to employ more teachers. The Department of Education had allocated too few teachers to the school, resulting in unmanageable class sizes. The economically depressed state of the community also meant that parents were not able to raise funds themselves to employ more teachers.
When asked for comment, Ann Fermor, one of the founders of Kids of Kurland had the following to say: "We originally had a work shop involving all the role players to determine the main needs of the school. It was quite obvious from this that the main shortage was of teachers. A couple of the classes had over 60 children in them making effective teaching impossible. At the moment we are paying for 3 class teachers and a teaching aid for the Xhosa class. This particular class includes Grades 1, 2 and 3 and has over 50 children in it. There is an urgent need for a special needs teacher and a part time social worker but unfortunately present funds don’t allow for employing either of these. The other programme which KOK has paid for is The Conscious Classroom which helped reduce the aggression which can be found in children coming from an abusive background. This was a great help with amazing results."

Although there has been great progress made, Kids of Kurland requires continued support through donations to the project. Click here to find out how you can help, or contact Ann Fermor at telephone number +27-82-452-8764.
