Adopt A Swimmer was registered as a NGO, in March 2013, by Louise Auersperg of Plett Aquatics Swimming.
Louise noticed that 80% of youth in our community cannot swim, largely due to the prohibitive cost of swimming lessons.
The program, typically 18 to 24 months long, aims to develop in children the essential life skill of water safety.
Children who show promise can be further mentored and sponsored to progress to competitive swimming, Micro Nipper and Nipper lifesaving, Water Polo, and other water sports such as Kayaking and Surfing.
Andy Fermor, owner of Hog Hollow Country Lodge, and himself a keen swimmer, had this to say: "For us sponsoring a child to learn to swim was a no-brainer. Firstly, it gives a child the confidence to react calmly to situations in the water. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the sense of achievement permeates to other aspects of life and breeds confidence that other challenges can be overcome."
