With such a wide range of terrains, from lush mountain forests, to rocky hills and jagged coastlines, the Garden Route is truly paradise for mountain bikers. You don't need to go far in any direction along the national road to find trails to suit all skill levels. This week we feature 2 of our favourite trail areas, Farleigh and Harkerville
Featuring 3 circular routes at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains, Farleigh Mountain Bike Trails offers great rides for beginners and intermediate cyclists alike. Water in the many streams, though discoloured by tree tannins, is drinkable.
Drive from Hog Hollow Country Lodge west along the N2 for about 40 minutes and strike northward deep into the Knysna Forests to the start point at Diepwalle Forestry Station, the highest point in the forest.
Green Route - Easy
This 7.5km route is ideal for families or beginners
Yellow Route - Moderate
This 20km route is great for intermediate riders looking to up their mileage and technical abilities, and features some moderate climbs and stunning views.
Blue Route - Moderate
This 25km route offers more challenging climbs and technical sections and is ideal for intermediate riders training for endurance events.

Harkerville Mountain Bike Trails has 4 circular routes with challenges for everyone from beginner to more advanced levels. NB - all routes double up occasionally with hiking trails, so please beware of pedestrians.
Drive 25 minutes west from Hog Hollow Country Lodge along the N2. Start point is on the N2 at the entrance to The Garden of Eden.
Yellow Route - Easy
An easy 13km route following jeep track and forestry service roads
Blue Route - Easy to Moderate
An 11km route following jeep track, service roads and some great single track, crossing several streams with drinkable water.
Green Route - Moderate (difficult when wet)
This 14km route will take you past a swimming hole wich is great for taking a break. An optional loop will also give you great views of the Harkerville coastline. Finish up on an exciting section of single track.
Red Route - Moderate to Difficult
An exciting 22km route with plenty of single track, fairly steep climbs and descents and spectacular views of the forests and coastline.
