If you're into hiking, the Garden route offers a collection of some of the best trails on the planet.
Here, we feature 5 trails within easy reach of Hog Hollow Country Lodge.
Robberg Nature Reserve
The beautiful Robberg peninsula with its astounding range of flora, fauna, unspoilt beaches and medium-difficulty rocky climbs, jaust 10 minutes drive from the centre of Plettenberg Bay, features 3 hikes of varying length.
Park at the secure parking area and strike out to the east for a circular route that brings you back to the car park.
Along the way you can view the Robberg seal colony, and sometimes, whales or even sharks!
Hike durations: 1 or 3 or 5 hours, depending on the route you choose.
There is an entry fee required at the gate.
The Waterfall Trail, Storms River
Comprising the first 3km of the world renowned Otter Trail, this fairly difficult hike, westwards away from the Storms River campgrounds in Tsitsikamma National Park, features a fair amount of rock-hopping over some slippery, jagged, terrain, culminating at a beautiful waterfall. Although only 3 hours in duration, you may want to make a day of it and take a picnic and swimming gear.
You will need to pay for entry into the Tsitsikamma National Park.
Pig's Head Hike, Natures Valley Network
So named because the destination is a high rocky outcrop resembling a pig's head, this moderate difficulty hike leads you across the Groot River, through Nature's Valley's beautiful indigenous forest and up some relatively steep, sometimes slippery, terrain, culminating in breath-taking views of the sea, coast, and Nature's Valley lagoon.
Hike duration is about 2 hours.
Don't forget your camera!
A challenging 9km circular hike, duration 5 hours, you will get to see a little of everything the area has to offer: a waterfall, indigenous forest, fynbos, gorgeous sea views and rocky beaches.
There is a less strenuous 4km option available, too.
There is normally an entrance fee applicable.
Stinkhoutkloof Nature Walk
Just 30 minutes drive eastwards from Hog Hollow Country Lodge will bring you to the Bloukrans Forest Station, from where the Stinkhoutkloof Nature Walk commences.
Be prepared for pristine indigenous forest featuring remarkable fungi, beautiful tree ferns and several river crossings.
The water, although discoloured from tree tannins, is drinkable, and you also want to have a swim in summer.
Entry to the trail is free, by self-issued permit, and the hike should take you no longer than 3 hours.
IMPORTANT: Since condition may vary according to weather and, in some cases, the tides of the sea, we suggest you consult the friendly staff at Hog Hollow Country Lodge before tackling any hike.
